10 Historical Figures Who Had God Complexes

A god complex is when a person thinks highly of himself, considering himself god-like or sometimes even God. It was the power they had that made them believe they were a god. History is full f crazy people who have strange complexes. People with a god complex are also one of them. Here are a few examples of historical people with God complexes:

1. Pharaoh Ramses II

Pharaoh Ramses II was an Egyptian Ruler from C. 1279 to 1213 BC. He was one of the most powerful pharaohs of his time. He initiated numerous military campaigns and extensive building projects. He had so many leaders and followers. With such absolute power, he developed a strong God complex. Ramses II promoted an intense cult of personality as someone blessed by the divine. Thus, he depicted himself in monumental statues and inscriptions as a god-like figure. 

2. Caligula

He was a Roman Emperor from 37-41 AD. Caligula was infamous for his authoritarian rule. He ruled over the people with such terror that he must be worshiped. He declared himself a living god and kept his statue among other Roman Gods in temples. He demanded absolute honor from his people. For this, he showed cruelty to an extent to create absolute terror. His own guards eventually assassinated him.

3. Pharaoh Akhenaten

An Egyptian Pharaoh, Akhenaten, ruled Egypt in the 14th century. He developed a strong god complex during his reign. It was the power that made him think he was a god. Considering himself a living God, he changed his name to The Sun God Aten. He stopped all kinds of religious reforms during his rule that caused huge social chaos in public.

4. Alexander the Great

Alexander was a military commander and a legendary conqueror. He is known for his victories all over the world. With such victories came power and fame. The more battles he won, the more arrogant he became. He proclaimed himself as divine, demanding to be worshiped. He created groups with the cult of personality. They all made him Alexender the Great. 

5. King Louis XIV

Famous as the “Sun King,” Louis XIV was the king of France. He had such a colossal god complex. Louis always surrounded himself with lavish events, presenting a power show. He once called himself the absolute power by famously saying, “L’État, c'est moi” (I am the state). The king epitomized the idea of an undeniable monarchy. He believed that he encapsulated the state and could do anything with France. 

6. Queen Cleopatra VII

Queen Cleopatra VII was the ruler of Egypt, who ruled from 51 to 30 BC. She is one of eth most famous historical figures. She presented a freak power show to the public. Cleopatra claimed to have a divine lineage. She claimed to be the direct descendant of the Egyptian deity, Isis. With an intense cult of personality, she always surrounded herself with her followers. They worshiped her for being a goddess-like figure with extraordinary beauty and allure.

7. Emperor Nero

He ruled the Roman Empire from 54 AD to 68 AD. His reign is often seen as a period of tyranny and excess in Roman history. Emperor Nero is often associated with a severe god complex. It was all driven by his narcissism, megalomania, and cruelty. He dreamt of Grandeur. He demanded to be worshiped like other Roman deities. There was a lot of rebellion during his rule. Finally, he committed suicide in 68 AD. 

8. Napoleon Bonaparte

Napoleon was a French military general and emperor in the early 19th century. He fought and conquered much of Europe. He believed that he was destined to rule. Napoleon referred to himself as a man of destiny. He had a strong sense of Grandeur. His desire for power led him to an authoritarian and eccentric rule. It all leads him to his ultimate downfall.

9. Adolf Hitler

Hitler is another terrific historical figure who caused dark history with his tyranny. He was a Nazi German dictator from 1934 to 1945. He is known for his terror and cruelty all over the world. With a strong God complex, he wanted absolute obedience from the public. His ideologies and racial discrimination led him to believe he was a chosen one. He killed millions of people for his global dominance with his god complex. 

10. Kim Jong-il

Kim Jong-il is a recent historical figure with a provident-god complex. He was the leader of North Korea from 1994 to 2011. Like his father, he claimed to be the benevolent king. He generated an intense cult of personality. This group elevated him to be the most dominant, all-knowing king. His reign was driven by diety-like adoration and fear.
