10 On-Set Catastrophes That Almost Ruined the Movie

The entertaining movies we watch in the cinema are made after lots of effort by the entire crew. Moreover, often, different incidents become a threat to the final product. From actors sustaining injuries to sudden deaths of stunt performers, many unpredictable circumstances arise during filming that can disrupt the entire process. That said, let’s look at some of such cinematic catastrophes. 

1. Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018)

During the filming of Maze Runner: The Death Cure, actor Dylan O’Brien survived a life-threatening accident while performing a stunt. The action required him to move between two cars, but he got dragged under one. This resulted in him getting multiple injuries, including concussions, broken cheekbones and eye sockets, and cuts. The shooting was delayed for almost a year so the lead actor could heal completely. 

2. Titanic (1997)

The director of Titanic, James Cameron, faced multiple issues that proved to be a hindrance in the completion of filming. For instance, one day, everyone shooting on the set got food poisoning by eating stale food. Moreover, the ship model used in the shooting caused injuries to the crew, like fractured faces and broken legs. The lead actress getting almost drowned during the shooting was another setback. 

3. Kick-Ass 2 (2013)

Kick-Ass 2, which starred Chloe Grace Moretz, also featured her stunt double named Talila Craig. While performing an action scene, she was thrown into a wall so hard that her head cracked open. While the incident was scary, thankfully, she recovered completely and went back to doing stunts in some time. 

4. Waterworld (1995)

The film Waterworld not only survived constant arguments between its two actors and over-budgeting but also faced multiple other problems. The weather was terrible, and many people were also stung by jellyfish. On top of it, a famous surfer, Laird Hamilton, got lost at sea and was stranded for hours until the Coast Guard rescued him. 

5. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)

While filming Transformers: Dark of the Moon, many extras were offered money to drive their car near a stunt scene. However, this did not turn out well, as one of the stunt cables snapped and flew through the air, hitting Gabriela Cedillo. Not only did she get extremely hurt, but this incident made her disabled for life. The production house had to pay $18 million as a penalty.

6. Red Heat (1988)

While there were no stunt-related incidents on the sets of Red Heat, the sudden demise of stunt coordinator Beenie E. Dobbins was a huge setback. During filming, he suffered from severe pneumonia, which resulted in a fatal heart attack. Dobbins was just 55 years old then, and the movie was dedicated to him. 

7. The Dark Knight (2008)

Although The Dark Knight is dedicated to Heath Ledger’s memory, there is a discussion about a 41-year-old stuntman as well who lost his life on the sets. He sustained life-taking head injuries from a Batmobile getting blown up near the area where he was practicing. It was the driver’s mistake that led to this cinematic catastrophe. 

8. xXx (2002)

The famous movie xXx features multiple extreme sports and saw the instant death of Vin Diesel’s body double, Harry O’Connor, during a stunt. The sequence that took his life included parasailing, during which his head got stuck on a bridge. Since his final moments were filmed, they’re included in the movie in his memory. 

9. Roar (1981)

Roar, a movie based on wild cats, had its actors suffer many injuries from the animals being used in shooting. For example, the cinematographer Jan de Bont got a head injury from a lion. As a result, he had 220 sutures and took a lot of time to recover. Moreover, the lead actor also broke his ankle while performing a scene with an elephant. 

10. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (2010)

The Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was struck with a tragic explosion accident while David Holmes (body double of Daniel Radcliffe) was filming a flight sequence. Although the explosion was controlled, it still made him fall from a height. This led to serious spinal injury, which resulted in Holmes losing his ability to walk forever.
