10 Villains We Cheered On Over the Hero

In storytelling, some bad guys catch attention and sometimes make the audience feel slightly sorry for them. These villains are difficult to understand because they're not just evil; they have some deep and hurtful past or reason for evilness. Even though they do some awful things, one might still like them.

1. Loki in Marvel Cinematic Universe – (Loki 2021-2023)

The God of Mischief is tricky and full of personal battles. Despite his wrongdoings, one can't deny Loki's charm and smarts, or even those times he plays a hero. He has a complicated bond with his brother Thor that brings out all sorts of challenges about who he is and where he fits in the grand scheme. 

2. Darth Vader in Star Wars: A New Hope (1977)

Being tough as nails as one of the Emperor's top enforcers doesn't cover up the tragic backstory of Darth, which is filled with loss and deception. Darth Vader used to be Anakin Skywalker, a heroic Jedi Knight before everything went downhill for him into the dark side. 

3. Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

The iconic character of Hann Lecter and how he eats people grabs the audience's attention. A woman shared that she liked the evil character as he helps Clarice Starling sometimes, even though he does some horrible stuff. She couldn't help but be intrigued by how his mind works and how he messes with people. Even though he's a monster, you end up liking him because there's more to him than being evil.

4. Magneto in Xmen (2000)

Erik Lehnsherr, or Magneto, believes mutants are better than humans. His tough time in the Holocaust made him think this way. A boy said that deep down, the character of Magneto was trying to keep other mutants safe from harm. He has a love-hate relationship with Charles Xavier, founder of the X-Men, who wants peace between humans and mutants. Sometimes, they get along, and other times, not so much.

5. The Joker in the Dark Knight (2008)

Heath Ledger made audiences stick to the screen as the Joker in The Dark Knight. A student found him crazy with charming vibes mixed with a dark sense of humor. Despite his scary acts of chaos and mayhem, something about his thinking grabs you. Heath dug into the Joker's love for chaos throughout Gotham City. Watching him, you were torn, shocked by his actions and intrigued by his mysterious side.

6. Cersei Lannister in Game of Thrones (2011-2019)

In Game of Thrones, as the leader of House Lannister, one might think of Cersai as a power-hungry figure with questionable choices. But it can't be denied that she's resilient and focused on keeping her family safe. This shows in how she deals with her kids and her brothers Jaime and Tyrion, not to mention all the enemies she faces. 

7. Thanos in Avengers: Endgame (2019)

Here's someone who thinks he's got a noble mission to bring balance to the universe by eliminating half its life. Thanos, also known as the Mad Titan from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, believes so strongly in his idea that one can understand why he does what he does, even if it means wiping out billions. His determination is something else.

8. Maleficent in Disney's Maleficent (2014)

In Disney's  Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent isn't just a simple villain. She's more like an anti-hero who got a raw deal. King Stefan's betrayal hurt her, making people feel sorry for her even though she cursed Princess Aurora. Despite that, Maleficent looks out for Aurora and eventually tries to fix her wrongs. Angelina Jolie made this character multi-dimensional.

9. Tyler Durden in Fight Club (1999)

 In Fight ClubTyler Durden, the wild leader of Project Mayhem, doesn't care much about rules or authority. He shakes up society's standards and has the charm of pushing against everything the average Joe stands by. The guy, with his daring moves, surprises the audience. One can't help but get caught up in his challenge to live on his terms.

10. Hannibal in NBC's Hannibal (2013-2015)

Dr. Hannibal Lecter is a smooth-talking psychiatrist, not just any psychiatrist. On NBC's Hannibal, he walks that fuzzy line between being a bad guy and somewhat of a twisted hero. It's weirdly intriguing how he mixes charm with his frightening hobbies. Hannibal, despite his terrible crimes, is quite interesting. You might find yourself pulled in by how smart and charming he is. His interactions with FBI profiler Will Graham are intricate.
