TikTok Is Not Real Life: 15 Digital Detox Tips for a Healthier Life

In recent years, our world has adopted an utterly digital connection mode. Though it has benefits, getting lost and overwhelmed with constant information, notifications, and social media updates is easy. For this reason, it’s essential to step back and disconnect from the internet now and then. A digital detox is a great way to reset and recharge, and here’s how you can do it, too!

1. Limit Screen Time

Let’s start by taking help from technology to kick-start your digital detox. Use screen time limit timers to control your daily screen time. In most devices, these are built-in features and a great way to monitor how much time you spend on social media apps. Limiting screen time is the first step to an effective digital detox.

2. Tech-Free Zones

This may be difficult, especially if you habitually use your phone at home, especially in the bathroom. Creating tech-free zones means restricting yourself from using your phone or devices in specific areas of the house. Recommended tech-free zones are the bedroom, bathroom, and dining room.

3. Schedule Detox Days

Suppose you find it difficult to go on a complete detox immediately. In that case, you can schedule days in the week for a detox. This will help you get into the habit of using your phone less without cutting yourself off in one go. Days like Sundays may be popular, but you can choose any day that works best for you.

4. The 20-20-20 Rule

Some people find this rule beneficial in reminding them to take breaks from using their phones. It means every 20 minutes, you use your phone and take a break by looking at any object 20 feet away for 20 minutes. It is a simple way to reduce the strain on your eyes from constant phone usage and a reminder to take regular breaks.

5. Mute Notifications

Notifications are the biggest problem when taking a digital detox. They can become a significant distraction and constantly remind us of the digital world. Sometimes, you cannot turn off all notifications. Still, you can mute non-essential notifications to reduce the number of distractions in your daily life.

6. Start a New Hobby

An excellent way to reduce phone usage is to start a new hobby (offline). Anything works, such as reading books, painting, knitting, or gardening, as long as it doesn’t involve using phones or other devices. You may feel bored initially, but a new hobby can be refreshing and fun.

7. Digital Curfew

Digital curfews are a more advanced form of screen time limits. Set a time in the day after which you will stop using digital devices, such as in the evening. If you do that, you will have a lot of time before bed to unwind and relax your mind before going to sleep. You’ll also be disconnected for some time of the day.

8. Mindfulness and Meditation

Practicing mindfulness and meditation for a few minutes daily is a great way to clear your head and stay calm. It helps you stay present, reducing your need to check your devices every few minutes constantly. It’s also a great way to evaluate your life and thoughts to improve your headspace.

9. Spend Time in Nature

Like meditation and mindfulness, relaxing in nature can help you calm down. It’s a great source of distraction from your devices. Take a walk, go sightseeing, picnic at the park, or hike–the options are endless! What’s a better way to counter digital overload with nature?

10. Declutter Your Devices

Decluttering your house and devices is important. If you think a timer can’t stop you, try uninstalling the apps you use the most. Or, if that’s too extreme, start off by uninstalling less-used apps, deleting old emails, and organizing your files. An organized digital space reduces stress.

11. Analogue Tasks

We make our lives easier by doing every task online. It’s a faster and more effective way to get work done quickly, but sometimes, you must return to the analog way of doing things. Start by using a physical planner or notebook for planning. Read a physical book instead of an eBook. Try journaling in a physical journal instead of using an e-journal.

13. Detox Community
