15 Signs Someone Is Only Pretending to Care About You

In our complicated social world, it is essential to distinguish between natural care and fake interest. Most of us are lucky enough to have trustworthy people around who actually care, but some struggle to find honest people. This article will look at 15 telltale signs that someone is pretending to care.

1. Inconsistency

To see if a person cares about you or is just pretending, look for inconsistency in his behavior. If someone is with you during his free time or when it is convenient, but when you need it, he is too busy. For example, if they don't want to go to the cinema alone, they ask you to come along. But whenever you ask them out, they've always got an excuse.

2. Conversations Feel Surface-level

Engagement in meaningful conversations is a sign of interest and excitement toward you. However, if your talks don't go beyond small conversations or they don't want to have deep discussions, that means they are not genuinely interested in you. People who really care wish to have deep and long dialogues with you to understand your thoughts.

3. Lack of Empathy

It hurts when you are going through a challenging situation and want to share with a friend how you are feeling, but they don't understand. They either come up with a ridiculous solution that can further complicate your condition or pass the conversation on to something else. So, a lack of understanding and genuineness is not a good sign.

4. Your Successes Don't Excite Them

Genuine friends cheer for your successes, no matter how big or small it is. They are always beside you in your bad and good times. If someone downplays your achievements or seems indifferent, they might be hiding jealousy or just don't regard you. Authentic people always appreciate your success and support you during failures.

5. They Avoid Eye Contact

Eye contact is a genuine indicator of someone's interest and connection with you. If someone often looks away or avoids eye contact while talking to you, it means they are not interested in speaking or feel uncomfortable. This is a sign that someone isn't really concerned about you when he doesn't listen attentively to your talks.

6. Minimal Effort

Relationships require effort from both sides to maintain, and many regret not putting in the due effort. When it comes to someone who is supposed to care about you, you're going to expect them to put in some effort. Being respectful and polite isn't enough. However, if someone is just pretending, their efforts to maintain the relationship will be minimal and shallow.

7. Their Body Language Feels Off

Body language can convey strong messages without verbal exchange. Nonverbal cues can reveal a lot about how someone truly feels. If someone closed off body language—like crossing arms, leaning away, or not engaging physically,  they might be hiding their disinterest. In contrast, honesty usually comes with welcoming body language.

8. Ignoring Boundaries

One must respect others' boundaries, whether they are close friends or not. When someone genuinely cares about you, they show it by respecting you and your boundaries. That means if someone does not respect your boundaries and ignores your feelings, they are only pretending to care about you.

9. Hidden Agendas

Sometimes, people pretend to be your friends and care about you when they have some hidden motives behind it. Imagine you are friends with your boss. A coworker aiming to climb the corporate ladder might take advantage of this by being extra nice to you. They might offer you help with your tasks to get the ultimate benefit in the future.

10. Negative Comments

When someone is genuinely your friend and cares about you, they don't demotivate you or make negative comments about your goals and interests. They are supportive of you at their heart. But if your goals are unrealistic, they won't dismiss you; instead, they'll try to give you constructive criticism. So that you can understand why they think it's not a good idea.

11. They Don't Remember Important Details

Remembering small details is essential in a relationship, and giving a sweet gesture is important. People who care will remember things that matter to you. If someone constantly forgets important dates, events, or details you've shared, it might mean they aren't genuinely interested. Real friends will always care about such information and keep track of what matters to you.

While it is nice to hear positive remarks from your loved ones, these remarks must be authentic and specific. Generic or insincere compliments can be a red flag. Empty flattery often hides apathy or is just an attempt to please without genuine interest.

13. Frequent Interruption

Frequent interruptions are a sign that someone is pretending to care. For example, if someone cuts off the conversation while you are talking, it shows a lack of respect and interest in what you're saying. Active listening and showing interest means giving someone your full attention and valuing what they say.

14. Comparisons

Real friends will never compare you with anyone. But if someone does that, they are not genuine. They might not say it outright, but they'll find ways to make you feel inferior to others. Avoid such people because they are only pretending to care.

15. Conditional Support

Their support is conditional. What does that mean? They will help you only if you will them in return. Genuine support is steady and unconditional. If someone only shows support when it's convenient or beneficial for them, they might not honestly care.
