This one’s for Americans—sit down and sigh over these way too common things you have heard foreigners say to you. Foreigners often fail to imagine the sheer size of America, which is why they put all Americans in one box and believe the stereotypes they see in movies and television. So you can’t blame Americans when they tell you they’re tired of hearing these things.
1. “Do You Know a “So and So” Person
This one is a classic, and you can’t escape the people asking it. Are you for real? Do you know every person in your country/state? This is when you’re reminded that foreigners have no idea how big America is. And also, how ridiculous is this question? Of course, we don’t know this random person living ten states over!
2. “Do You Own a Gun?”
Okay, you can’t blame the foreigners on this one. For them, it probably feels like America has shootings almost every day. And because it’s legal to own guns here, foreigners are so fascinated by this concept. Especially because in the majority of the countries worldwide, owning a weapon is out of the question.
3. Americans Are Bad at Geography.
We have all seen videos of people approaching random people on the streets and asking them to locate certain countries on a map. Many Americans need help finding them correctly, but this generalization is unfair and overplayed. After visiting America, one foreign influencer stated that it’s okay if Americans are bad at geography; their country is so big they don’t need to look beyond it.
4. The Portion Sizes
Oh, this is another common one. Foreigners are always surprised to see the huge portion sizes served at American restaurants. Even worldwide food chains have different standard sizes in America. Sure, it’s interesting to note, but we don’t get why it’s so shocking. Everyone loves a big portion size—what's wrong with that?
5. “Your Healthcare System Is Messed Up.”
This statement is true, but it’s not fun for Americans to be constantly reminded of this fact. It is pretty embarrassing that in a first-world country like America, its citizens still struggle to obtain basic medical facilities. This is a complex issue for Americans and a very obvious sore point.
6. Football VS. Soccer
This is another debate. When the entire world unanimously calls a sport “football,” why does America choose to use that same name for another game where you don’t even use your feet that much? It’s probably because America just needs to stand out everywhere, but this is one thing they can't win over. It’s football, not soccer.
7. The Metric System
This is another example of how America loves to stand out and be “different” from everyone else. Foreigners always complain about this issue, especially when traveling the country or following an American recipe. You need to have all your calculators out to figure out a simple thing just because Americans decided not to use kilometers!
8. “Can You Say ‘Y’all’?”
This one is just plain bizarre to ask someone. Why do foreigners think all Americans speak like this? People often go as far as to say that Americans all wear cowboy hats and ride their horses to work. But seriously, no, we don’t! Haven’t you all heard of accents? Not everyone speaks the same way!
9. “Have You Visited “So And So City/State?”
Again, foreigners need to imagine the sheer size of America. There are 52 states within the country and over 19,500 incorporated towns, cities, and villages. The government is bigger than many countries combined! So, it is unlikely that one person has been to every town. It’s next to impossible, probably.
10. “You Don’t Sound American!”
Sometimes, it's difficult for foreigners to understand that America is a huge country. Because of this, there are many different types of people living here—people of all shapes, sizes, colors, and accents. There is no one standard accent for Americans. That’s how language and dialect evolve!
11. “Do You Eat Burgers All the Time?”
These questions are encouraged because Hollywood portrays Americans in films and TV shows. So you can’t blame foreigners when they ask these questions because our movies show that we, indeed, only eat junk food all the time. But that’s not true—we eat normal food as well!

12. “Do You All Have Debt?”
This is another sensitive topic for Americans. We will always be known in the world for this: almost everyone in the country has thousands of dollars of debt to pay off, which could be due to student loans, medical insurance, etc. It’s a big drawback of our country, and it’s not nice to be constantly reminded.
13. Paid Vacations
Most Americans may not be aware of this, but in the rest of the world, employees are legally given many paid vacation days. These can be utilized for actual vacations and unforeseen circumstances. Again, it's a sore spot for Americans because despite how advanced we are, our country needs to catch up in other ways.
14. The Tipping Culture
Foreigners commonly ask Americans about the tipping culture. Most of the world doesn’t have this concept, but Americans have to tip everywhere, and it’s not even a choice! Americans are used to it, but tourists are shocked every time!
15. “Why Are Americans So Patriotic?”
If you visit America, you will be surprised to see the flag everywhere. There’s no particular reason for this, and it's pretty normal for people. But foreigners find it strange and question why everyone is so patriotic.
