12 Things Contributing to the Growing Trend of Boomer Divorces

In this era, divorce rates have tremendously increased among couples. Looking at the statistics, you will see that boomers are one of the generations with the most divorce rates.

The boomer generation is the largest, with a population of 77 million worldwide.

There are multiple reasons for the high divorce rate among boomers. Here are a few reasons behind boomers' increasing divorces:

1. No Fault Divorce Law

Changes in the law related to divorce became one of the most significant reasons for the increased divorce rate among boomers. It's known as the No-Fault Divorce age, where two people can get out of a marriage without any reason. Boomer couples no longer wanting to stay together use this opportunity and get separated.

2. Change in Social Norms

With the continuous changes in the trends of times, social norms are also shifting. Most social norms have entirely shifted their form from what they were once. Divorce is one of them as it becomes accessible. Our ancestors used to consider it a stigma where couples used to stay together no matter how toxic their marriage was. But today, you don't stay in such relationships.

3. Low Tolerance

Another cause of boomers' increasing divorce rate is decreased tolerance. People of the past had a high tolerance. They used to bear many burdens to keep their families intact. They tolerated a lot to keep their children safe. But boomers have ceased this trend. They keep their tolerance level low, which leads to disputes and divorces.

4. Empty Nest Syndrome

This is a common syndrome found in many boomers. Often, a marriage becomes a relation of burden. Where a couple may stay together only for their children, they want to give a complete family to their kids, so they put on a show of a happy family. As their kids grow and become independent, parents decide their duty is done, and they get separated.

5. Increased Life Expectancy

If you compare this generation to the older ones, you'll realize that boomers had a longer life than others. With a longer life, you continuously develop your personality and grow mentally. What worked for you at one point in life may not work for you at another point. Boomers with an increased life expectancy may want to change their partner for a better life.

6. Counseling Out of Toxic Marriages

Mental health awareness is growing with time. There were fewer chances for such awareness in the past. But today, everyone can get counseling for a better relationship. When people take counseling and therapy, many realize they live in a toxic relationship. They may eventually get out of such marriages.

7. Unfulfilled Expectations

Another significant cause of the high divorce rate among boomers is unfulfilled expectations. Each individual has some expectations from his life and from the person they are adding to their life. They want to fulfill them as they live on. But no one can get all of their expectations fulfilled. Many boomers may look back and realize their expectations were not met. At this point, they decide to get out of such marriages.

8. Financial Freedom

Financial responsibility may not seem to have much importance in a relationship. But it has a more considerable value than anyone can imagine. In the past, there were stereotypical gender roles. A man would work for finance and a woman for the house. But today, both are working to earn money. Eventually, they get less focused on their home. Both partners have financial freedom and might want to get separated if their marriage does not seem to work out.

9. Lack of Emotional Intimacy

When a couple gets married, they are emotionally invested in each other. Every couple has to face many challenges as they live on. Many couples emotionally drift apart with time. It leads them to a lack of emotional intimacy. As a couple gets emotionally apart, it raises many problems. Boomers faced the same issue. They let their emotional intimacy drift apart, not realizing it will cause separation. It took them to a point where they no longer needed to stay with their partner.

Midlife crisis is one of the biggest challenges that almost everyone has to face in life. It forces a person to question their life choices. Along with many other things, people also question their decision about selecting the right life partner. Boomers also got struck by the midlife crisis. It led them to get divorced when this crisis overwhelmed them emotionally.

11. Revolt Against Traditions & Culture

Boomers are the first generation who stood up for themselves when they felt cultures and traditions were doing them wrong. History has recorded many boomers getting divorced. They broke their family norms and took a step that is a significant stigma. For them, taking a divorce felt like a revolt against their culture and traditions. They willingly fought for this and got separated.

12. Health and Aging Concerns

The health issue is one issue that comes as a person ages. Along with aging and health concerns, a person's personality can take a complete shift. A few people completely loos those personality traits that made them the best person. Losing empathy, compassion, and care for your partner as you age became the cause of many boomers getting divorced.
