Better Late Than Never: 10 Things People Wish They Knew Sooner in Life

While it's true that life is the name of constantly learning, there are some things you wish you'd realized a lot earlier than you did. On an online platform, people shared things they wished they had known sooner in life.

1. Belt Buckle Blooper

A university student had their eureka moment regarding wearing belts. They learned that putting your belt end first through the loops is the key to making belts with buckles of all sizes fit your loops. As is the environment of such educational institutes, they excitedly shared their discovery with their peers, only to realize the error of their (past) ways.

2. The Truth About Bonsai

Miniature enthusiasts love the delicate beauty of bonsai trees and the patience needed to cultivate them. However, one such enthusiast completely missed the incredible effort that goes into growing these little beauties since they thought bonsais are not actually a species of dwarf trees but are instead like a toy dog breed of trees.

3. The Legendary Jackalope

North American folklore is filled with the mythical jackalopes: rabbits with the giant antlers of a reindeer. One zoophile only clocked the mythic status of these creatures much later than they should have. To be fair, their defense that plenty of weird animals exist, like the artificially bred liger, zebroid, and zonkey, and a jackalope isn't that weird, is pretty sound.

4. Artistic License

A near-sighted person had quite a funny story about not realizing they needed glasses for a long time. Instead of the usual not seeing individual leaves on trees, they thought that all the beautiful moon paintings, with details like craters, were the artists taking creative liberty, and everyone saw the moon as just a blurry white circle.

5. Ape Battles

This hilarious mix-up will give you a deep respect for the narrator. A strongly anti-racist guy was greatly offended at people talking about “gorilla fighters” in Africa, calling it unnecessary and racist to refer to soldiers as animals. He later discovered that the correct phrase is “guerrilla fighters,” although this mistake is also forgivable since gorillas are native only to Africa.

6. Money-Mindedness

Time is not actually money, as this money-minded person thought. For a long time, they mistakenly believed that “a quarter past” meant 25 minutes past instead of the correct 15 minutes. They simply took the value of quarters in money to be the standard, never even considering that an hour is 60, not 100 minutes, the way a dollar is 100 cents.

7. This Little Piggy

A discussion on the nursery rhyme This Little Piggy led to a discovery that shocked one innocent user. The third line, “this little piggy had roast beef,” refers to fattening the pig for slaughter. Beyond the heartbreak of a beloved rhyme ruined the realization that pigs are omnivores that can eat everything, including human dead bodies, was not a pleasant one.

Scrubbing Bubbles is an American household name, with commercials of adorable animated bubbles scrubbing away at your bathroom. Unlike most sensible people, one naive twenty-year-old bought the Scrubbing Bubbles cleaner in anticipation of actual cleaning bubbles going to town cleaning their bathroom like Cinderella's mice. Adulthood is challenging, though, and the stress of figuring their life out probably fried their brain a bit.

9. Narwhals

One flabbergasted user discovered the existence of the mythical-looking narwhals in their forties. Narwhals are real sea creatures. They have a tusk growing out of their head, which resembles a unicorn's horn, making them look like a fantastical aquatic unicorn out of something like a Greek myth. Considering their incredible popularity as stuffed plushies, it's easy to assume that they are a hybrid creature created for children.

10. Enjoying a Sober Life

One recovering alcoholic solemnly shared their recently learned life lesson: you can live a full life without using alcohol to fuel your joy. Social drinking is peer pressure in a way, especially among young people, where the term implies getting blackout drunk at nightclubs. You don't need to feel like you're missing out on your youth by limiting your alcohol intake to just getting a buzz.
