Burke advises care when it comes to activated charcoal products, which are becoming increasingly popular in various forms, including toothpaste and wellness injections. Burke advises against using these goods despite their various health claims. According to her, “Activated charcoal can bind to substances in your digestive tract and eliminate them, potentially preventing the absorption of vital vitamins and minerals and decreasing the effectiveness of medications.”

Dr. Sara Mikulsky, PT, DPT, stresses that not all plant-based diets are the same and warns about the proliferation of junk food made from plants. Dr. Mikulsky warns that despite the expanding market for plant-based goods like the well-known Impossible Burger, these goods could not actually offer the advantages of a balanced plant-based diet. It is essential to pay attention to each product's nutritional composition and processing to ensure that they meet the specified health goals.

A growing health fad is a pegan diet, which combines veganism and paleo eating. Burke, a nutrition specialist, advises against its restrictive character. Burke says that the pegan diet has extra restrictions on dairy, whole grains, beans, and other carbohydrates in addition to the paleo diet's existing restrictions. Although some people may find it appealing, before implementing such a restrictive eating pattern, it's necessary to consider the possible influence on nutrient intake and total dietary balance.

The blood-type diet has gained attention as a diet trend that claims to improve weight, energy, and overall health by following specific food recommendations based on an individual's blood type. Lisa Richards, a nutritionist and author, tolerates this approach. “The diet suggests that individuals should eat certain foods and avoid others based on their blood type, and even recommends specific physical activities based on blood type,” says Richards.

Water fasting, a practice in which individuals abstain from consuming anything except water for a period of 24 to 72 hours, has gained popularity as a health trend. However, it is important to approach water fasting cautiously, as it carries various risks, as explained by Kasey Hageman, a registered dietitian. “Water fasting can lead to dehydration, a drop in blood pressure, and can worsen certain medical conditions such as gout, diabetes, and eating disorders,” cautions Hageman.

The potato diet, a short-term fad diet that promotes rapid weight loss, restricts the food choices to only plain potatoes for a duration of three to five days. Kasey Hageman, a registered dietitian, warns about the potential drawbacks of this diet trend. “While it may result in weight loss, the potato diet is highly restrictive, lacking in certain nutrients, and can contribute to unhealthy eating behaviors,” explains Hageman.

The mono diet, also known as the monotrophic diet, is a trend that promotes consuming only one type of food for a specific period, aiming for rapid weight loss. Kasey Hageman, a registered dietitian, highlights the potential health risks associated with this approach. “The monotrophic diet claims to offer quick and simple weight loss by restricting food choices to a single item, such as eggs or chocolate,” explains Hageman. “However, when you limit yourself to a single food, you miss out on essential nutrients that come from a varied diet.”

Weight-loss drinks, including various drink mixes and powders, often claim to aid in weight loss and detoxification. However, Jordan Higgins, a registered dietitian and founder of Turning Tables Nashville, cautions against these products. “Most weight-loss drinks are essentially overpriced vitamin and mineral supplements,” explains Higgins. “Consumers pay extra for synthetic nutrients that can easily be obtained from the regularly consumed foods.”

9. Açaí Bowls: Ineffective for Açaí Consumption

Açaí bowls, often praised for their vibrant appearance and nutritional content, may not be as healthy as they appear. Jordan Higgins, a registered dietitian and founder of Turning Tables Nashville, explains that while açaí berries are rich in antioxidants like anthocyanin and vitamins A, C, and E, consuming them solely in the form of açaí bowls may not be the most efficient way to reap their benefits. “While açaí bowls are popular, they may not be the most effective way to incorporate this superfood into your diet,” cautions Higgins.

Egg whites, often favored by those seeking a low-fat protein option, may not provide the full range of nutritional benefits found in eggs. According to Jordan Higgins, a registered dietitian and founder of Turning Tables Nashville, egg yolks contain a significant portion of the egg's protein and essential micronutrients such as vitamins A, D, E, K, and various B vitamins. “While egg whites are predominantly protein, the yolks house the most nutrition,” explains Higgins.
