The Impact of Tipping on Dining Out

Tipping now has become the social norm on which employees' income depends, especially the waitstaff of food industries. Although it encourages friendly interaction, somehow, it becomes controversial to update this outdated system. The customers sometimes find it inconvenient to pay the tip, which may lead to unfair treatment and anxiety. Let's find out what are the possible impacts of tipping on dining out.

Mostly, people dine out because they are fond of fast food or they are too lazy to cook their own food. A person shared that he has always been the fair tipper and had not felt an ounce of guilt if he somehow couldn't pay the tip. But, in order to save his thousands of dollars, he had learned how to cook. According to him, it's totally worth it to escape from any guilt and anxiety.

2. Google Review

Reviewing your experience online can help the owners to change their policies. One of the girls mentioned that she had ordered the food online but was prompted to pay a tip for it. She wrote a Google review that she didn't like the trend of giving tips to businessmen who couldn't pay well to their employees. And they are demanding from her to pay for it. That's totally unfair.

3. Tipping Dentists and Pharmacists

Tipping may seem meaningful if paid to someone hardworking. An individual reviewed the screen services at the counter of Crumble Cookies. A girl was standing there, and her job was to only keep watch on the customers. When he pressed on the no-tip icon, her expressions were atrocious. He said he would rather give tips to the dentist and pharmacist who are actually doing something.

4. Tip on Mystery Bills

Some restaurant owners love to include strange mystery fees on the top of bills. A guy criticized that he had no issue tipping the waitstaff for their services. But the restaurant owners who could not pay well to their employees were then going to add anonymous bill taxes. The taxes include the cost of living, COVID recovery fee, staff healthcare fee, etc. He stated that it was totally insane.

5. A Surprising Trap

Some restaurants pose a surprising bill at the end of their services. Another person stresses the outrageous service fee that is imposed by the Thanksgiving meal. He shared that he went to the Thanksgiving meal with two adults and a 3-year-old child. All was going well until they handed over the 18% gratuity for his party. He considered it an unexpected and sudden surprise that he never looked back.

The tipping system is somehow irritating as it sometimes results in anxiety and apprehension. An individual commented on this issue. According to him, tipping is just a stupid system. He is going to pay for everything that is written on the menu and nothing else. It is the responsibility of the employers to pay a suitable wage to the employees, and the employees should not rely on charity to earn a decent wage.

7. Unaffordable

Tipping culture has become engraved in our societies. A U.S. citizen shared that it was unexpected that the server demanded what he would leave when going out in cafes & shops, Even though he didn't employ any services while buying coffee and smoothie. So, why should he pay for it? It feels like he is being bullied, and this trend is becoming unaffordable day by day.

The concept of tipping varies from country to country and culture to culture. An overseas Asian citizen shared that he has lived in the U.S. for years and realized the huge difference between Asian and U.S. restaurants. There is basically no service difference but a visible dissimilarity in terms of service charges and tipping culture. It is really annoying and bothersome.

9. Regretful Experience

Tipping culture must be flexible enough that one who wants to tip willingly gives it. A commenter mentioned that while visiting the restaurant with his family, he savored every moment with full joy as all of his friends got together after a great time. But all of a sudden, along with the bill, some additional taxes and service charges were listed. Their happiness and enjoyment faded after seeing such a huge amount of bills. He always regrets visiting that ridiculous place.
