10 Worst Flirting Techniques Men Think Actually Work but Don’t

Not all pick-up lines can be a winner. But some are just outright crazy. So here's a list of the top ten ridiculous pick-up lines and techniques.

1. Classic Conditioning

Classic conditioning is defined as a learning process that occurs when two stimuli are repeatedly paired. For example, many of us have heard about Pavlov's experiment with his dog and the feeding bell. We may have even tried to condition a response themselves.

One user explained her experience: “one time, I was hanging out with friends, he was sitting behind me, and I laughed about something and felt my hair pulled. When I freaked out and confronted him about it, he said he did it because he wanted me to associate my joy with him hurting me.”

2. Drunk Equals Stupid

Drinking can lower your inhibitions and make a guy seem funnier than you usually would. But you must be bad at flirting if you rely on alcohol to assist your pick-up lines.

One user wrote that she found out due to a medical issue that she couldn't drink, only to find a man say to her, “It must be hard for a guy to flirt with you considering he can't get you drunk and stupid.”

3. The Direct Approach

Some guys have tried the direct approach by asking straightforward questions. For example, what's your name? Are you single? Think I am cute? This approach may have worked for them, but usually, this can come off as pushy and quizzical.

One user wrote, “after being quizzed with the usual questions, he asked if I had any kids. I said no. This derailed his train of thought completely. He said he couldn't believe it; he'd never met a girl my age who didn't have kids, and he kept following me around and repeating it.”

4. Backhanded Compliments

Some people date solely on looks, while others give up and date for someone nice. Or so somebody told this user. “A guy told me he was done going out with attractive women and now just wanted to date someone nice instead,” she explained.

5. Natural Beauty

Some women wear make-up to look more appealing, and some wear make-up to feel pretty. Either way, make-up should be used to accentuate your natural beauty, if even worn at all.

One user explained, “this man came up to me to say you don't wear as much make-up as a woman should, but I like natural beauty.” I wonder if backhanded compliments ever worked for him.

6. Work on the Body

Many women suffer from body shame. You can be the nicest, funniest, or best person but still suffer from body shame. It doesn't help when a stranger disrespects and degrades you on your insecurities. One user explained, “He looked me up and down, then said you'd be so hot if it weren't for your stomach.”

7. Options

When you're out and get hit on, you don't assume you are the only one this person has tried to pick up that night. But you also don't expect that he would tell you about his other options. For example, one user commented, “I was at a bar one night and dismissed a guy hitting on me, and his response was, You know, I'm going to another bar later. So you are not my only option.”

8. Less Attractive Versions

It's been said we all have a doppelganger out there somewhere. And some have been told they look like certain celebrities. While this is usually a compliment, sometimes it can be insulting. “He said I looked like a less attractive version of some celebrity,” she said.

9. Foot-in-Mouth Syndrome

Even men can realize when they have said the wrong pickup line. One man explained, “Over winter break, my first year in college, I grew a beard and tried a new hairstyle. A girl I had talked to a few times told me I like your facial hair, to which I replied, Thanks, I like yours too.”

10. Insulting Friends

One user replied, “While I'm sitting at a big table with several close female friends, all of whom can hear him, You're the most attractive woman here. Everyone else is so plain. They're not even trying, and some are overweight.”
