History is one of the critical disciplines of intellectualism. Cinephiles who watch such movies love to explore stories before their birth visually. It allows us to understand what happened in the past and that things are the way they are today, only if facts are kept raw. However, it is not always possible because some filmmakers trying to dramatize the story get derailed from historical accuracy. Here are 10 top movies that lied to you about History:
1. Braveheart (1995)
This 1995s historical thriller is directed by Mel Gibson, packed with revenge action & epic war film. The film's storyline narrates the tale of Scottish rebel warrior William Wallace as husband of French Princess Isabella, but historians wrote they never met in real life, meaning it is a fictional story. He was dramatized as Scotland's guardian. However, there's no proof whether he was one or not. Despite historical messes, the film was acclaimed by critics and was awarded five Oscars in different categories.
2. Titanic (1997)
Most of us know about Titanic, even if we haven't watched it yet. Most remember it as a ship that sank at the end after colliding with an iceberg, but the reality isn't as depicted. However, there was no Jack & Rose on the actual Titanic, but it was depicted as a real passenger story. Alongside, the ship didn't sink in a couple of minutes, but approx. 2-3 hours after collision. With a star cast like Leonardo DiCaprio & Kate Winslet, the film became the highest-grossing one of all time until 2010.
3. Pearl Harbor (2001)
The movie is directed by Michael Bay, who made a romantic war film. Real WWII aircraft were used for aerial footage to make the period movie look authentic. Still, it has many logical errors that don't complement historical events. As written in books, the U.S. aircraft that fought against Japanese fighters were shown more than the actual time limit, which was a maximum of 90 minutes. In another scene, the U.S. army was seen better engaging during the attack, but in reality, the U.S. planes couldn't resist them enough & they had complete superiority.
4. 300 (2006)
This movie is an adaptation of the comic series of the same name by Frank Miller. It depicts the Battle of Thermopylae fought between King Leonidas, who led 300 Spartans against the Persian army of King Xerxes. Some scenes are highly exaggerated and far from reality, like Spartans being portrayed as fighting without shirts or sandals. They used to be fully armed & protected. Furthermore, the movie depicts only 300 Spartans fighting on the battlefield, but they were accompanied by other forces from Greece, numbering around 5-7 thousand men.
5. The Last Samurai (2003)
The film's story revolves around Nathan Algren, a U.S. Army captain who joins forces with some samurai to fight against westernization and feudal society. However, the story is a fabrication, as samurai were already adjusting to modern life during the Boshin War. In addition, the samurai were not fighting to retain an ancient way of life. They were adapting to modernization already. Despite being unparallel to historical reality, it sparked interest among moviegoers in samurai history & the Meiji restoration period.
6. Alexander (2004)
The movie unfolds the exhilarating journey of Alexander, the King of Greece, who defeats the King of Persia easily & then sets out to conquer the world. It depicts his sexuality as homosexual, while there's no substantial evidence to back it. His death is shown as a result of illness, while there's no exact cause known to historians to date. Netizens opined that the director fabricated historical details while trying to dramatize events.
7. Apocalypto (2006)
A young man in a Mayan tribal country is trapped and plans to escape before being sacrificed. The debate over whether Apocalypto includes historical distortions continues, with some arguing that Maya civilization deteriorated before the Spanish conquest. At the same time, others argued that the tribes used Native American-style languages instead of Mayan ones. Aside from all this, the movie has stunning visuals and battlefield action scenes.
8. 10,000 B.C (2008)
The Ice Age-set picture is chastised for historical inaccuracies, questioning the authenticity of time-period films. The story follows a teenage mammoth hunter and his tribe as they embark on an incredible journey to the end of the planet, negotiating an explosive volcano. The movie portrayed the tribes speaking with British & American accents, which couldn't have been possible centuries back. A considerably vital thing to note here is that wooly mammoths had already gone extinct thousands of years before 10,000 B.C.
9. The Imitation Game (2014)
The 2014 film, directed by Morten Tyldum and written by Graham Moore, tells the story of British mathematician Alan Turing, who deciphered the German enigma code to understand their strategy during WWII. Turing successfully built a machine to crack the codes, showcasing patriotism, intellectualism, and war cry. As depicted, Turing is the only one behind the machine's creation, but it was actually more of a teamwork thing.
10. Oppenheimer (2023)
Cillian Murphy made his comeback with “Oppenheimer,” released last year, breaking records with the fastest to $500M at the box office, and was the highest-grossing WWII movie of all time. The story unveils as Physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer is working on the top-secret Manhattan Project to design an atomic bomb in a race against Nazi Germany. Unlike shown that his wife is into politics, she in real life avoided it & backed her husband's work to support him.
