Fact or Fiction? 10 True Stories That Stretch the Imagination

Some stories are too creepy and terrifying to seem true. From ghosts to killers to the unexplained, these stories can truly terrify.

1. Secret Roommate

One user tells the story of a friend of her mother's. This lady was missing food, having extra dirty dishes, and missing towels. After months of this, she finally heard some thumping coming from the attic, so she went to investigate.

She needed to prepare for what she found. A small radio, hot plate, sleeping bag, and pillow. It was a makeshift living quarter, so she immediately called the police, who started watching the home only to catch a homeless man climbing a tree and sneaking into a window after the homeowner left.

She explained, “The funny part about this story is they got to know each other throughout the ordeal, and the guy was very respectful, just down on his luck. So she didn't press charges. Instead, let him move in, helped him get a job, and he lived in the attic until he got back on his feet.”

2. Train Wreckage

A train with 51 wagons of sulfur, fertilizer, petrol, and cotton wool broke loose in Khayyam, Iran. It rolled down the track about 12 miles until it derailed. Chemicals leaked, and authorities tried to extinguish whatever fires broke out.

At one point, the whole thing explodes. The entire town of Khayyam was literally demolished, three nearby towns were severely damaged, and it was heard over 40 miles away. The wreckage continued to explode for several days after. Around 300 people died, more than that injured, and a 3.6 earthquake was caused.

3. Outhouse Floor Collapse

In 1904 in Cincinnati, Ohio, tragedy struck when a sudden rainstorm caused a large group of schoolgirls to run to the nearby outhouse for shelter. Unfortunately, the badly rotten floorboards and the kids' weight caused the floor to fall from under the children, with 30 or more girls falling into a vault of foul-smelling waste.

Back then, there was no emergency response team with tall ladders to assist the children out of the vault. It took several men hours to get all the girls out of the vault. All but nine would come out alive.

4. Hidden Damages

After buying an Audi A4 convertible with pop-up roll hoops, a man lost control of the car and skidded down a steep bank. The roll hoops did their job, and he survived with what appeared to be superficial scrapes and bruises.

He walked back up the bank to the side of the road, then got on the phone to the police to report the accident. While he was standing there, a driver from a car that had seen the accident came over to speak to him.

Approaching from behind, the stranger asked if he was okay. The man turned around to reply and dropped dead. His neck had been fractured but was in one piece until he turned his head when it severed his spinal cord.

Unable to call for help due to fear his wife would open the sliding gate, which would cause his leg to be severed, he stayed there all night until morning when his wife looked out the window and saw him hanging. She called the fire department, and they cut the spike to free the man.

6. Warning From Future Self

No one uses a pager today, not like they were used in the past. One could send a page to call them back, and if there is an emergency, you would add 911 at the end to let them know, stop everything and call me.

This user says on a drive to interstate 4, she received a page from a number she did not recognize, followed by a 911. She immediately took the next exit and pulled into a store with four payphones. She dialed the number and listened to the other line ring. After several rings, she realized one of the other payphones was ringing in tune with hers.

When she hung up the receiver on her phone, the ringing on the other stopped, so she walked over to see that the payphone's number showed as the number on her pager. A little unnerved, the lady left and got back on the interstate, only to spot a four-car pile-up now blocking the road that had just happened. She would have been in the wreckage if she had not pulled off to make the call instead of witnessing it.

However, this man was not a police officer, and he did not drive her to the police station but pulled into a parking lot instead. He then cuffed her, or so he thought, pulled out a gun, and threatened to kill her if she resisted.

She escaped and fought him off despite being hit over the head several times. Her kidnapper was Ted Bundy. He killed another woman just four hours later.

There's nothing scarier than working in a lab and knowing you're doing everything right to have it all go wrong! This user ended up being fine due to minimal exposure. But still a scary experience.

Not knowing that it could go through gloves, none of them did. They began handling it. She got some on her palm and continued working. Many times kids can't describe what they see accurately. But this user swears by her encounter, still not knowing fully what the encounter was. She was in her room, her baby sister sleeping in a crib a few feet from her bed.

As she rolled over, she noticed the closet door was open, and what appeared to be a man was standing in the doorway. She freaked out and ran into the living room where the babysitter was sleeping on the couch and squeezed in behind the babysitter and the back of the couch.

As she tried to wake the babysitter, she noticed the man was now standing at the end of the couch, staring at them. She buried her face into the babysitter's back, and the babysitter finally started to stir awake. When the little girl looked up, the man was now gone.

The babysitter searched the home, but the front door was still locked, and no sign of anyone else in the house. The little girl swears to this day it was a ghost.
